MGMT: Congratulations (album verdict)

So I've been listening to the new MGMT album off of whoismgmt.com. Initially it was really hard to get into. The music seems so smooth and blended together that it is hard to decipher any catchy-ness in it. This album is like the first time I listened to Animal Collective, really hard to get into. But, give it a chance...listen to it like 3 or 4 times through because you will change your mind and come to love it. It is like the beach boys mixed with psychedelic awesomeness mixed in and all sorts of other vibes from other obscure genres. I've sorta come to classify this kind of music as Acid Indie (AKA MGMT, Animal Collective, Passion Pit.) Be warned though, this album has absolutely no song like "Time To Pretend" or "Kids" that will immediately get you caught up in its catchy synths. Instead there are songs like "Flash Delerium" and "It's Working" that has beach boy choruses that are actually pretty catchy.

"Flash Delirium" shifts from this beach boy vibe to a classic mgmt vibe, then back to a beach boy vibe and finally culminates to a Grease vibe. It is the most musically interesting song I have heard all year.

"It's Working" is obviously about MGMT tripping on what ever stuff they take, but the musical build up in this song is awesome. There is a point where they add in organ which sounds awesome. Then you once again get a surfing vibe at its culmination.

"Song For Dan Treacy" Is also one of my favorites. It doesn't really have the beach boys vibe. It almost has a tidge of Arctic Monkey vibes at the beginning. Ultimately you really get a unique MGMT psychedelic vibe.

Really I think if you have listened to MGMT's first album and you liked the later half of the album after "Kids" that was more psychedelic like "Future Reflections" and "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters, you will have an easier time liking this album.

The new album is really a new musical treat to me, and I love it. I plan on buying it once it comes out as a true fan of MGMT and music in general. Music is really tricky. Sometimes a song can immediately catch you, but other times it takes time for the listener to comprehend contents of a song. I find that songs which take time to decipher are really much more rewarding to the listener and stick with you longer once comprehended. MGMT's sophmore album is full of these type of songs that with time you will realize that this is gonna place as one of the best albums of the year to everyone who truly appreciates music as a whole.

SHMU will be buying this album.

VERDICT? APPROVED

FINAL THOUGHTS: This album is a good sign to the quality of musicians nowadays. To SHMU, 2010 has been the year of artist reinventing themselves. Vampire Weekend, Gorrilaz, and MGMT have all really broken off from their past sounds and moved into new areas that have really made SHMU respect these artists a lot more. Vampire Weekend was impressive because i thought they were a one trick pony. Gorrilaz was awesome because have presented me with the most meaningful and catchy enviromental statement of the year. MGMT, which I guessed would head in a new direction and not be a mainstream sell out, went in an entirely new direction which i would never of guessed they would take.

MGMT's New Album Release Date: April 13

Album Name: Congratulations

SHMU PREDICTION: I think with the success of Vampire Weekends new album topping the billboard charts opening and number of people who now listen to "Time To Pretend." I predict this album will push them to the top. I wouldn't be surprised if they topped the Billboards Also. This is one album I will actually buy (that is if the critics give it thumbs up.)

P.S. about Vampire Weekend: I know I was skeptical about Vampire Weekend's (VW) new album when I heard "Horchata" for the first time but time has changed my opinion. Once you get past the fact that VW has moved in a different direction that has almost alienated themselves from their old music, you are left with an awesome more electronic album that still has that VW flair. Congrats on your success. I think that this is the first example where an indie band has not "sold out" to hit it big on the charts. Infact its weird because the new album seems less accessible then the old.

VERDICT? GET YOU CALENDARS READY!

Here is a T-shirt I really want.

If you do not know who Animal Collective is, you should because they are hands down my favorite band right now. There is absolutely no other band that sounds like them. With their latest album Merriweather Post Pavilion recently becoming the Album of the Year on Pitchfork.com (the biggest online music website), it is about time the band makes a shirt based off the album cover. Just look at the album cover above...do you notice anything? That is right, it is an illusion. If you look at it the right way you can see the picture move like a wave. Now imagine that on a shirt...the whole upper part of your body is a moving wave!

Trippy and awesome. Now...how am i gonna get my hands on this...

I am guessing at their concert...please get another tour going animal collective. I saving money for your concert and your shirt!

VERDICT? WHERE TO COP?

The Very Best (featuring the singer from Vampire Weekend.)

I'm digging this track from Afro Pop artist The Very Best.

I'm waiting to see if Vampire Weekends next album is good or not. Cause the singers appearance on this song reminded me about how much I enjoyed Vampire Weekend's original album

VERDICT? FRESH!

New Animal Collective

If you are not a fan of Animal Collective this might be the weirdest shit ever, but if you are...prepare for what could be the greatest AC track EVER! This track got a perfect 10 on pitchfork (which is the rolling stone of music websites, and is usually is really, really picky.)

Animal Collective- What Would I Want? Sky

Also a cool side note: This is the first band ever allowed to use a Grateful Dead sample in a song.

VERDICT? ANIMAL COLLECTIVE YEEEE!!!! APPROVED and FRESH

VERDICT? FUCKING AWESOME

Music You Should Listen To: "Sometimes" by Miami Horror

This band from Melbourne Australia has made the most catch track I have heard in a while. Their video for it is especially video which I'm guessing was filmed on some beautiful pristine beach in Australia. A beautiful girl in a beautiful video to a beautiful song...why not take a listen.

Miami Horror - Sometimes from PEDESTRIAN Creative. on Vimeo.

i think the music video has to do with the lyrics mentioning the fountain of youth. The girl finds some pendent that leads her to the fountain of youth or some sorta alien structure.

Thanks to my friend Bono for posting this on Facebook. He runs a music blog at paulbono.com and dj's college parties.

Vampire Weekend: Horchata

Before you read the review of the single please listen here. I want you to formulate your own opinion before reading mine.

SHMU's MUSIC REVIEW #1
Let me begin by saying that i enjoyed vampire weekend's first album a lot. It was simple, catchy and fun, but my biggest fear for this band is that they are a One Album Band.

For clarity here is SHMU's definition of a One Album band:

A band that releases a very successful and good debut album but has already over extended its creative juices within this first album. One fears that their second album will not live up to the first album at all and just be an uncreative mess. This unfortunately means that their fate will be buried forever after their second release.

There are many One Album Bands i have come across over the years:

-Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: whose first album was great and fresh while their second album was lame and received poor reviews.

-Tapes and Tapes: These guys had a couple catchy tunes on their first album which got over hyped and then people realized by their second release that they were done for.

-Peter Bjorn and John: Their first album was pure genius, but there second album was completely of my radar. plus i just realized one of there new songs sounds exactly like an old one except for some electronic work. The Song from the first album thats great: Amsterdam. The song from the new album thats faster but too similar: Nothing To worry about

So anyway here is Vampire Weekends new song "Horchata". After listening to it a couple of times it is very confusing musically. They tried to use electronic stuff in it and background vocals that end up sounding like a retarded Animal Collective. I mean they could of done this same song without the electronic and just use the same catchy instrumentals they did before in there first album. I admit the lyrics are still fun and fresh. I hope the other songs are not this disappointing, for i fear the signs of a ONE ALBUM BAND

VERDICT? OKAY, BUT HOPE FOR BETTER
